Franky works with us, and his situation is a perfect example for our program. Franky's motorcycle is worth just over US$5000. Franky has the title and has paid the required fees for taxes, license and insurance. Franky currently has a loan against the cycle for US$225 and he is paying 3.5% monthly (42% annual) interest on this loan. Franky would like to buy two mama pigs (sows) to raise and sell their litters. A pregnant mama pig costs $500. In her first litter she can have between 5 and 15 piglets, each of which sells for $35. As the pigs grow, they can be sold for more money, and the mama pigs can have new litters every four months. Pig food is inexpensive and can include table scraps.

With the Careful Loan Network, an individual lender can loan US$1250 to El Fuego del Sol, and we would loan the money to a local business or a family such as Franky's. The lender could earn 12% annually on the investment. El Fuego del Sol would charge a commission of 5%. Franky would use the loan to pay off his current loan, and he would legally sign the bike over to El Fuego del Sol until the loan was paid in full. Then he would use the proceeds from the pig business to pay the loan and to generate extra family income. The 17% loan he would obtain from this program would be less than half the interest fees charged by any other lender in the area.
Access to reasonable credit can lead to the creation of many profitable small businesses. This can lead to huge improvements in the quality of life for the entire community.
